10. One Piece

One Piece is a shonen manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda that has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since August 1997. It follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy whose body gains the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit, and his diverse crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy explores the ocean in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” in order to become the next Pirate King. Along his journey, he makes several friends who share similar goals, while battling against various villains throughout the Grand Line. Since its debut more than ten years ago, it has been one of the best-selling manga in history and has had a large impact on the adventure genre.

Bleach follows the adventures of Ichigo Kurosaki after he obtains the powers of a Soul Reaper —a death personification similar to the Grim Reaper—from another Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki. His newfound powers force him to take on the duties of defending humans from evil spirits and guiding departed souls to the afterlife known as Soul Society while restoring his own Soul Reaper powers when necessary. Although involved in many battles against various characters, Bleach focuses mainly on Ichigo’s complex relationship with Rukia and its effects on his allies and friends during such events. The series employs an array of creative artistic styles. It has since been translated into English and released in North America by VIZ Media.

Gintama is a Japanese manga written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi. The story is set in an alternate version of Tokyo, which was invaded by aliens called Amanto in the late Edo period when Japan ended its policy of national isolationism. As a result, Japan was forced to open its ports to outsiders, and aliens began flooding the country shortly thereafter. The plot revolves around an eccentric samurai, Gintoki Sakata, his apprentice, Shinpachi Shimura, and a teenage alien girl who dreams of reforming demons known as the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann franchise; with the former two acting as freelancers who handle odd jobs (particularly those of a violent nature) for the general population in order to pay the rent, while the latter performs duties more befitting a little girl.

Detective Conan also known as Case Closed, is an ongoing Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama. It has been serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shōnen Sunday magazine since January 19, 1994, with the chapters collected into eighty-five tankōbon volumes so far. The story follows amateur detective Shinichi Kudo, who was turned into a child by a poison called APTX 4869 but was saved by his friend, Professor Agasa. Shinichi adopts the pseudonym Conan Edogawa and hides in Ran’s house as her father’s “pet” while solving many challenging cases.

Death Note, also known as Desu Nōto, is a Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The story follows Light Yagami, a man who finds a supernatural notebook known as the “Death Note”, which belonged to its previous owner – a demon called Ryuk. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and Light takes it upon himself to rid the world of criminals so he can create Kira, an alias for his superhero persona designed to inspire fear. However, as criminals begin dropping dead left and right, an enigmatic detective known only L begins to catch onto the killer’s trail. As more people die with either unlikely or impossible causes, one can only conclude that Kira is real and among them.

The plot tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and dreams to become the Hokage, the ninja in his village who is acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all. The series is based on a one-shot comic by Kishimoto that was published in Akamaru Jump.

He learns that his father, Ging, is a legendary “Hunter” known as the world’s best “Hunter.” Despite such high praise from not only others but himself as well, Ging left his son with his relatives in order to pursue the profession of hunting down rare beasts called “Nen.” Gon departs upon joining the Hunter Association in order to find his father and learn about “Nen.” Along the way, he meets new friends like Kurapika and Leorio, who join him on his quest to become a professional Hunter.

While the manga initially received a positive response from readers, the release of its anime adaptation has greatly increased its popularity; both domestically and internationally. My Hero Academia is set in a world where most of the population has some kind of superpower, called “quirks” with 80% of all people having some kind of superpower. The story follows Izuku Midoriya, who does not have a quirk despite his lifelong dream to be like the No. 1 hero, All Might. Since he was young, everyone said that he wouldn’t achieve anything; however, when he becomes the top student at his school after transferring to the top-ranked school, Shouta Aizawa, sees potential in him and gives him a chance to become a hero. He also aims for the league of Vill in order to find out how to become a hero.
